Hersheypark's newest and oldest (surviving) roller coasters, the Great Bear (left) and the Comet. The sky ride travel right in between the two. The Great Bear is an "inverted" coaster, meaning it hangs from the track and is capable of loops and other maneuvers. It was manufactured in 1998 by B&M of Switzerland. The Great Bear is one of their smoothest so far. The Comet was built in 1946 by the Philadelphia Toboggan
Company and was designed by Herb Schmeck who is renowned for great coasters. Hershey has
named the trains on the comet, one is "Thunder" and the other is
"Lightning". The Comet replaced an earlier coaster named the Wildcat (not to be
confused with the current Wildcat). |
Hersheypark added the Wildcat 1996. It was the first roller coaster designed and built by the firm GCI and was a resounding success. The Wildcat is fairly smooth and keeps up it's speed from the first drop to the finish. |
The Sidewinder is a compact coaster with plenty of excitement. After being raised up a hill, you are dropped through the station. Exiting the station, you go into the boomerang section and then into the vertical loop. But that is only half the ride - now it does the whole thing backwards. The Sidewinder was manufactured by Vekoma. |
The image above shows the mass of metal in the lower section of the Great Bear. The picture to the left shows the dangling feet of Great Bear riders. Almost looks like they are going to attack the sky ride cars. |
