Dorney Park and Wildwater
Kingdom
Allentown, PA
Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom is located just of Interstate 78 in Allentown, PA. It is the combination of a fairly large amusement park and a water park. One price covers admission to both. In 1992, the park was purchased by Cedarfair LP, the owners of Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio. After the purchase, major improvements have been made in every aspect of the park and more recently major rides have been added, such as Steel Force and Hang Time. The park has a nice balance of old and new as well as wet and dry rides. There is probably something for everyone. To reach Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom, follow Interstate 78 to the Hamilton Avenue (route 222) East Exit. The park is just past the exit. Follow the signs to the parking lot. There is a fee charged for parking. Dorney Park & Wildwater Kingdom |
New for 1999 is Dominator built by S&S Sports Power. One side of the tower suddenly blasts riders straight up 15 stories in the air before dropping them back to earth. The other tower slowly lifts riders to 170 feet, then thrusts them downward at faster than freefall speeds. Check out the park's website at www.dorneypark.com for more information. The Skyride and the Monster were removed at the end of the 1998 season. The park has four major roller coasters. 1997 saw the introduction of Steel Force, the second hypercoaster from Morgan Manufacturing. This ride has jumped to the top of many coaster enthusiast lists as one of the best coasters. The park is also home to the 1924 Thunderhawk, a wonderful wood coaster designed by Herb Schmeck. In the late 1920s this ride was extended to become what it is today. In 1989, the park added Hercules, one of the highest wooden coasters in the US. Hercules has a first drop directly over a lake. The fourth coaster is the double looping Laser, a Schwartzkopf designed thriller added in 1986. Click here to see photographs of previous attractions at Dorney Park. The are quite a few food outlets in the park and the waterpark including some name brand operations. Click here For photographs of the park and many of it's rides including:
